Recording on phones, laptops, and tablets: what to expect on each
Updated October 8, 2026
Phones (iPhone and Android)
The most common way people record on Whoosh. The recorder uses the front-facing camera by default so you can see yourself while recording, exactly like a video call, and you can switch to the back camera if you need it. Hold the phone the way the campaign asks: the owner picks Vertical, Horizontal or Either, and the recorder asks you to re-record if the video comes out the wrong way round.
Laptops and desktops
Uses your webcam and built-in or connected microphone the same way a video call would. If you have an external webcam or microphone plugged in, your browser will typically default to it over the built-in hardware — check the permission prompt if you want to pick a specific device.
Tablets
Behaves like the phone experience: front camera, same record-preview-submit flow, no app required. Screen size is the only real difference, and the page adapts to it automatically.
No special equipment needed
Nothing about Whoosh requires a ring light, an external mic, or a particular phone model. The built-in camera and microphone on any device from the last several years is more than enough quality for a reel that plays well on another screen — see Tips for recording a great video message if you want to go beyond "good enough."
